Arizona Soccer Falls to No. 3 UCLA, 4-0
Oct. 26, 2003
Los Angeles, Calif. (Oct. 26) - The University of Arizona women's soccer team was shut out at No. 3 UCLA, 4-0, in Los Angeles on Sunday. The loss drops the Wildcats to 5-8-2 overall and 1-3-1 in Pac-10 play, while the Bruins remain undefeated in conference action at 5-0-1, with a 12-1-3 overall mark. UCLA also stretches its unbeaten streak to nine games.
UCLA went up 2-0 in the first 17 minutes of the game off a goal by Iris Mora at 12:56 and a penalty kick by Whitney Jones at 16:40. The Wildcats had two good chances in the first half, when Candice Wilks got behind the Bruin defense, but they couldn't convert. UCLA out-shot Arizona, 10-3, for the period and took its 2-0 lead into the break.
Bristyn Davis made the score 3-0 for the Bruins in the 60th minute, and Kim Devine capped the win with a fourth strike with just 42 seconds left in the match.
The Bruins out-shot the Cats, 22-6, for the game and had an 11-4 edge in shots on-goal. Freshman forward Lauren Winters logged a team-best two shots, both on-goal, for Arizona. Mallory Miller, Candice Wilks, Kelly Nelson and Erin Bevacqua had one shot each for the Cats. Sophomore goalkeeper Natalie Juarez played all 90 minutes in-goal for the UA, tallying seven saves.
'There's a reason why UCLA is the No. 3 team in the country. They are a good team loaded with high quality players,' said first-year head coach Dan Tobias. 'We have talked before about being precise. Defensively, we were real loose and gave them too much space.
'We are looking forward to being home for two games next weekend. It's [senior] Lindsey Greenwood's last two home games, and we want to send her off with two wins.'
The Wildcats play their final home series of the season next weekend against Oregon State on Friday, Oct. 31, at 7 p.m. and against Oregon on Sunday, Nov. 2, at 1 p.m. at Murphey Stadium (15th Street and Plumer Avenue).
