Mia Jerkov Named Pac-10 Volleyball Player of the Week
Oct. 27, 2003
WALNUT CREEK, CA - California junior Mia Jerkov has been selected Pac-10 Volleyball Player of the Week for Oct. 20-26, conference Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today. It is the fourth Pac-10 Player of the Week honor for Jerkov this season (Sept. 8, Sept. 29, Oct. 13) and the sixth Pac-10 Player of the Week honor all-time for Jerkov - more than any other active Pac-10 player. Jerkov has now earned conference player of the week honors four of the nine weeks it has been presented this year. She was also the Oct. 13 Sports Imports/AVCA Division I National Player of the Week.
A 6-3 outside hitter from Split, Croatia, Jerkov finished with a combined 52 kills, 34 digs and four service aces last week in the Bears' victories at Washington State and No. 10 Washington. Against the Cougars, a team Cal had not defeated in Pullman since Sept. 16, 1989, she helped the Bears snap a 13-match losing streak to WSU with a team-high 29 kills, 20 digs and a .338 hitting percentage. Jerkov had 23 kills, 14 digs and two service aces the following night against Washington. It was the first time Cal had swept the Washington schools, both at home and on the road, since the 1989 season.
The nationally No. 6 ranked Bears (18-2, 9-2) next host the Arizona schools this week in Haas Pavilion. Cal faces Arizona on Friday, Oct. 31 at 7 p.m., and Arizona State, Saturday, Nov. 1 at 7 p.m.
