USC's Leinart, WSU's Derting, and Oregon's Gipson Named Pac-10 Player of the Week

LEINART, DERTING, GIPSON NAMED BANK OF AMERICA HIGHER STANDARDSPAC-10 FOOTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

WALNUT CREEK, Calif.--Quarterback Matt Leinart of USC, linebacker Will Derting of Washington State and special teams performer Aaron Gipson of Oregon have been named Bank of America Higher Standards Pac-10 Football Players of the Week.

Leinart, a sophomore from Santa Ana, Calif., directed the USC offense in the Trojans' 43-23 win at Washington. Leinart completed 19 of 29 passes (.655) for 351 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions. His touchdowns covered 20, 60, 52 and 37 yards. It marks the second straight week Leinart passed for 351 yards and four touchdowns.

Derting, a sophomore from Okanogan, Wash., led the Washington State defensive effort in the Cougars' 36-28 win against Oregon State. Derting posted eight tackles, seven solo, including three quarterback sacks (-21) and forced a fumble. Washington State limited Oregon State, which entered the game leading the Pac-10 in rushing and total offense, to 15 yards rushing, 291 yards total offense and 4-of-20 third-down conversions. The Cougar defense also forced five turnovers and recorded seven quarterback sacks (-51). It marks the second defensive player of the week award for Derting this season.

Gipson, a sophomore from Fontana, Calif., was singled out for his special teams play in Oregon's 35-0 shutout of Stanford. Gipson was credited with four tackles on kickoff coverage as Stanford, which entered the game as Pac-10 leader in kickoff returns, was held to a 15.3-yard average on six returns.

Others nominated for offensive player of the week honors were running backs Adimchinobe Echemandu of California, Maurice Drew of UCLA, Terrence Whitehead of Oregon and Michael Bell of Arizona and receiver Scott Lunde of Washington State. Also nominated on defense were linebackers Kevin Mitchell of Oregon, Brandon Chillar of UCLA and Joe Siofele of Arizona and backs Will Poole of USC and Mitch Meeuwsen of Oregon State. Kickers Justin Medlock of UCLA and Kirk Ylinemi of Oregon State and punter Kyle Basler of Washington State were nominated for special teams play.
