Blue Team Dominates in UA Women's Basketball Annual Red & Blue Game
Oct. 30, 2003
Tucson, Ariz. (Oct. 30) - In its annual Red & Blue Game, the University of Arizona women's basketball Blue Team dominated the Red (White) Team, 76-60, in McKale Center on Thursday night.
Two of the Wildcats' male practice players led the Blue Team to its win. Kyle Hopkins, a freshman from Santa Barbara, Calif., shot 8-for-10 from the floor on his way to a game-high-tying 20 points. Junior Leo Thornton, a native of Arcadia, Calif., racked up 18 points.
In a contest that saw most of the Wildcat women switching teams at halftime, eight current Cats helped the Blue Team in its victory. Sophomore guard Katrina Lindner, who is recovering from her second ACL injury, was the top-scoring Wildcat on the Blue Team, with seven points. She also had three steals. Freshman forward Shannon Hobson, a starter in the first half for the Red Team, had six points and six rebounds in the second half while playing for the Blue squad.
Senior guard Aimee Grzyb drained six of her eight field goal attempts en route to 20 points for the Red Team. Sophomore center Shawntinice Polk had 14 points and nine rebounds, and junior guard Dee-Dee Wheeler added seven points. Senior guard Jessica Duger contributed seven points and four assists for the Red squad.
'There were moments that were good, but our overall decision-making was not really good,' said head coach Joan Bonvicini, who enters her 13th season at the helm of the Wildcat program. 'We need to board some more. We have to play a lot smarter, and we obviously have a long road ahead. It's good to play in this type of environment. It really gives us a better idea of what we need to work on.'
The Wildcats will face their first outside competition of the 2003-04 season when they take on the Latvian Select team in an exhibition game on Tuesday, Nov. 4, at 7 p.m. in McKale Center. Arizona will play one more tune-up against Athletes in Action on Thursday, Nov. 13, at 7 p.m. before officially tipping-off the season against Northern Arizona on Nov. 22.
