ASU Women's Swimming & Diving Tops NAU

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - The Arizona State women's swimming and diving team (2-0) recorded their second victory of the year on Friday, defeating Northern Arizona 172-71at the Wall Aquatic Center on the campus of NAU. The Sun Devils set eight pool records on the day, led by ï¿½gnes Kovï¿½cs who had two victories, both being new pool bests.
Kovï¿½cs' first win came in the 200 freestyle after she touched the wall in 1:52.06, better than three seconds faster than teammate Sandra Steffensen in second with a 1:55.47. Amanda Gillespie took third in the 200 free (1:55.86) to record the first of three Sun Devil 1-2-3 sweeps on the afternoon. Kovï¿½cs' other win was in the 200 breaststroke, where she clocked a 2:16.78 to take home the victory by over seven-and-a-half seconds and notch a NCAA 'B' time. Fellow Sun Devils Christine Creek (2:24.40) and Brianna Patterson (2:27.31) finished second and third respectively in that event.
ASU came up with victories in 11 of 13 events in defeating NAU for the 12th consecutive time. Sun Devil diver Trisha Tumlinson also won two events, grabbing wins on both the 1-meter (324.83) and 3-meter (325.43), with her 1m score being a new Wall Aquatic Center record.
Back in the swimming pool, other Arizona State individual wins were recorded by Kathryn Hennessy in the 1000 freestyle (10:20.10), Florencia Szigeti in the 50 freestyle (24.12), Cara DeVinny in the 200 butterfly (2:09.64), Petra Banovic in the 100 freestyle (53.14) and Abra Armour in the 200 backstroke (2:09.11).
The Sun Devils notched wins in both relay events and bettered the previous pool marks by over eight seconds in each race. The 400 medley relay of Erin Baldinger, Kovï¿½cs, Florence Mauro and Szigeti took first in 3:52.57 while the 400 free relay of Banovic, Armour, Szigeti and Mauro recorded the win with a 3:30.91.
Tomorrow, November 1, the men's swimmers and divers are in action as they travel to Las Vegas, Nev., to take on UNLV. The meet start time is at 2 p.m.
