Cal wins Six of Nine Events at Colleges' Cup

VANCOUVER, B.C. - The University of California women's swimming team captured six of nine events at the Colleges' Cup, hosted by the University of British Columbia, Friday in Vancouver. Several Canadian colleges are competing at the short course meters meet including the University of Calgary, University of Victoria and Simon Fraser University.

Senior Natalie Coughlin and freshman Erin Reilly led the Golden Bears with two wins apiece. Coughlin was victorious in the 200 individual medley (2:16.17) and the 100 backstroke (1:01.29), while Reilly won the 200 butterfly (2:13.88) and 800 freestyle (8:44.85).
Coughlin and Reilly were also part of Cal's 400 free relay team (Keiko Amano, Coughlin, Danielle Becks, Reilly) that placed first in a time of 3:48.34. Cal's 200 medley relay finished second behind the UBC Thunderbirds, touching the wall in 2:03.26.
Other impressive performances for the Bears included senior Natalie Griffith and sophomores Helen Silver and Kate Tiedeman's wins in bonus finals. Griffith won the 'B' final of the 200 fly (2:17.87), while Silver won the 100 back (1:02.37) and Tiedeman placed first in the 800 free (8:46.04).
Cal concludes the Colleges' Cup Saturday with the following event schedule: 400 medley relay, 400 free, 100 fly, 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 400 IM and 200 relay relay. The Bears are next in action in Berkeley on Friday, Nov. 14 to compete against San Jose State at 1 p.m. at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
