Volleyball Upsets No. 6 Cal, 3-0, In Berkeley

TUCSON, Ariz.- The Arizona volleyball team upset No. 6-ranked Cal 3-0 Friday night in Berkeley. Game scores were 30-28, 30-22, 30-24. The win, UA's 11th-straight at Haas Pavilion, improved the Wildcats to 11-12 overall and 5-7 in the Pac-10.
Led by career-high 24 kills on .588 hitting by sophomore Jennifer Abernathy and a 15-kill, 12-dig, eight-block night from Kim Glass, Arizona hit .421 as team in its third win over a top 10-ranked team this season. The Wildcats also posted 11 total blocks helping to limit Cal to a .177 attack percentage in the match.
Abernethy paced the Wildcats in the closely contested first frame. The second-year outsider hitter recorded nine kills on 12 attempts with just one error for a .667 hitting percentage in the game. Freshman Kristina Baum added four more on .500 hitting in game one as the Wildcats out hit the Golden Bears .386 to .271. Baum finished the match with a season-high nine kills.
Abernethy continued her hot hitting in Arizona's game two victory, finishing with seven kills on 10 swings with just one error. Assisted by her impressive hitting, the Wildcats jumped out to an eight point lead and never trailed after an early 5-5 tie. Arizona blistered the Hass floor with a .469 game two team hitting percentage, while four team blocks helped limit Cal to just a .081 attack percentage in the frame.
The Wildcats handed the Golden Bears their first three-game sweep of the season in game three with eight kills from Abernathy and six total team blocks.
Arizona's middle blocker tandem of Bre Ladd and Jolene Killough teamed up for 10 kills on 17 swings with zero errors and eight total blocks in the win. Freshman setter Stephanie Butkus dished out 54 assist and junior libero Kelli Mulvany followed up her season-high 21 digs in Thursday's 3-1 loss at Stanford with a match-high 16 against the Golden Bears on Friday.
Reigning Pac-10 Player of the Week Mia Jerkov came off the bench to led Cal with 12 kills in two games.
Arizona will continue its rigorous schedule next weekend as No. 8-ranked UCLA and top-ranked USC come to Tucson for a pair of matches on Thursday and Friday. Both matches are set for a 7 pm Tucson time first serve and the contest with the Women of Troy can be seen live on Fox Sports Net Arizona.
