Cal Falls to No. 13 Washington, 3-1
Nov. 2, 2003
BERKELEY, Calif. - On senior day at Edwards Stadium, Cal could not send its seven seniors out as winners. The Golden Bears fell to No. 13 Washington, 3-1. The loss will make an NCAA Tournament berth very difficult. Cal fell to 7-7-4, 2-5-1 Pac-10, while Washington went to 10-5-3, 3-3-1 Pac-10.
Things looked good early for the Golden Bears. In the 12th minute, Katie Ratican knocked a ball away from Washington goalkeeper Lisa Brookens. Sierra Schlesinger was the benefactor of the hard challenge as she found an open net.
Cal went into the second half with the one-goal edge, but that lead quickly unraveled. Kim Taylor received a ball in space on the edge of the penalty box from Kelley Schweigert. Taylor took a booming right-footed shot that sailed perfectly into the upper right corner of the net in the 48th minute.
With the teams tied, the game was up and down. Both teams pushed forward looking for the knockout punch.
It was Washington that found it in the 73rd minute. Tina Frimpong took a Blair Ruport through ball and beat Cal goalkeeper Anna Key on the left side of the goal. In the 75th minute, the two players hooked up again for what looked like an identical goal except from the right side this time.
Cal fought hard till the final whistle. Kimberly Yokers had a solid game in midfield distributing balls that generated many of Cal's 12 shots on net. Tracy Hamm used her speed to create mismatches up the field. She was on the end of five shots but could not score.
Cal wraps up the regular season at Stanford on Friday, Nov. 7.
