Alex Vlaski Upset In First Round of ITA National Indoor Championships

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -Washington's Alex Vlaski was upset in the first round of singles competition, while Vlaski and Alex Slovic suffered a first round doubles loss at the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships hosted by the University of Michigan, Thursday.
Vlaski, the tournament's No. 1 seed, was defeated in straight sets by Jeff Kader from William & Mary, 7-6 (3), 6-3, in the opening round of competition. Vlaski is the fourth men's No. 1 seed to lose in the opening round since this tournament began in 1978 and the second in a row. Last year Daniel Klemetz from Middle Tennessee lost to Phil Stolt of Illinois. Vlaski was this year's ITA All-American singles champion.
Vlaski and Slovic also met defeat in first round doubles action, falling to the third-seeded team of Zoltan Csanadi and Izak van der Merwe from Old Dominion, 9-7. The pair advanced to the National Indoor Championships after winning the ITA Northwest Regional Crown in October.
The 2003 ITA Intercollegiate Indoor Championships continue through Sunday.
