Hoshimiya, Wells Earn Academic All-District Honors

Seniors Dru Hoshimiya and Zach Wells of the top-ranked UCLA men's soccer team have been selected to the CoSIDA Academic All-District VIII team and are now in the running for Academic All-America honors.
Hoshimiya, a midfielder from South Pasadena, CA (South Pasadena HS), holds a 3.46 cumulative GPA in Sociology. A 12-game starter, he has scored two goals and one assist for five points while moving out of the midfield and stepping in as sweeper after an injured teammate went down. Hoshimiya was named to Soccer America's Team of the Week for Sept. 29-Oct. 5 after scoring a goal against Oregon State and helping to shut out 13th-ranked Washington. His other goal scored this season was the game-winner against Virginia on Sept. 7. In 2001, Hoshimiya earned honorable mention All-Pac-10 acclaim and first-team Pac-10 All-Academic honors.
Wells, a goalkeeper from Costa Mesa, CA (Newport Harbor HS), has accumulated a 3.22 GPA in American Literature and Culture. He is currently ranked No. 1 in the nation with a goals against average of 0.34. He has started in all 16 of UCLA's games, logging 1325:02 minutes while shutting out nine opponents and allowing only five goals, one on a penalty kick. Wells ranks third on UCLA's all-time career saves list with 249, fifth on the career shutout list with 25 and fifth on the career victories list with 44. He set the school mark for saves in a season with 101 in 2001. Last season, Wells was the 2002 NCAA College Cup Defensive MVP after shutting out Stanford in the NCAA Championship match. He also earned College Soccer News honorable mention All-America honors, and second-team acclaim by the Pac-10 and NSCAA Far West Region. He is a two-time Pac-10 All-Academic honoree and a three-time Pac-10 Player of the Week.
