Oregon State Volleyball Gets by WSU in Five Games
Nov. 6, 2003
PULLMAN, Wash. -- The Washington State volleyball team watched another two-game lead disintegrate into a five-game loss Thursday night as Oregon State won 23-30, 28-30, 30-20, 30-20, 15-3, on the Cougars' home court of Bohler Gym.
For WSU, playing without the services of sophomore setter Brenn Larson, it was the eighth time this season and the third time in conference action the youthful Washington State team has lost a five-game match.
WSU drops to 7-18 overall, 3-11 in Pac-10 play while the Beavers advanced to a 14-11 overall mark and 4-9 in conference action.
Amanda Eggert and Allison Lawrence combined for 34 kills to lead OSU. Anne Watts-Roberts and Karah Rhoades added another 30 kills and Watt-Roberts led the match in digs with 21 and with Eggert contributed four blocks each.
Zanda Bautre led WSU with 22 kills and 17 digs. The usual Cougar setter, Larson, was on crutches with two sprained ankles. Freshman walk-on Kali Richards had 51 assists for WSU and Jennifer Todd led the match with six blocks.
The Beavers out-hit the Cougars 79 kills to 62 kills but out-dug WSU 79 to 59.
'It's not so much the hitting as it is the passing because we are not getting the ball up to the setter and the setter can't get the ball to anybody. When you pass the ball on the 20-foot line, it makes it pretty hard for the setter to run the offense,' Cougar Head Coach Cindy Fredrick said. 'And passing was not good. Not good at all.'
Jen Barcus, WSU middle blocker, added, 'I thought in the first two games we were really together and were really feeling good about what we were doing. In the third, fourth and fifth games we just broke apart. Mentally we weren't sticking together.'
Washington State ends its home schedule Friday night against Oregon (3-18, 0-12).
