Beavers Close Out Fall Season With 13th Place Finish

LONG BEACH, Calif.- -

The Oregon State men's golf team finished in 13th place Friday with a final round 289 at the Del Walker Intercollegiate in Long Beach, California. The Beavers posted a three-round score of 884.

Freshman Ryan Gilmour fired a final-round even-par 71 and junior Brad Simpson posted a 1-over 72 as both finished the tournament tied for 21st.

'Our effort was there and our attitude was good, but we got a lot of unfortunate bounces,' said OSU coach Brian Watts. 'This course had our number today.

'We hate to end the season on a sour note, but our guys are optimistic and in good spirits. The team played well this fall. We contended in three tournaments and we are not going to let one bad tournament bring us down.'

Looking forward to spring, Watts said, 'We know what we need to work on and will be prepared when the spring season starts.'

The team title was won by UC-Riverside after a final-round 4-under 280, giving the Highlanders a final score of 855, beating out Texas-San Antonio by just two strokes.

Lamar's Chris Stroud, after carding an 11-under 131 in the first two rounds, posted an even-par 71 in the final round to take home individual medallist honors.

Freshman Jonathan Green carded a final-round 73 that was highlighted by an ace on the par-3, 180-yard seventh hole. He finished tied for 31st with a 220, his best finish of the year.

Senior Sean Deacon tied for 60th with a 227 and sophomore Brian Kelley finished tied for 64th with a 228. Junior Cameron MacKenzie did not play in the final round.

This was the last tournament of the fall season for OSU men's golf. They will resume play Feb. 12-14 at the TaylorMade Invitational in Waikoloa, Hawai'i.
