STANFORD, Calif. - Cal closed out the 2003 season with a 2-1 overtime loss to Stanford Friday night at Maloney Field. The Golden Bears finished the year with a 7-8-4 record (2-6-1 Pac-10), while the Cardinal improved to 10-8-2 overall (5-3-1 Pac-10).
Allyson Marquand scored from 35 yards in the 43rd minute to give Stanford a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Cal sent the game into overtime with a dramatic penalty kick by senior defender Amy Willison five seconds before the final whistle. The goal was Willison's second of 2003 and moved her into a tie with seniors Kimberly Yokers and Kassie Doubrava for the team lead for points with eight.
Marquand lifted the Cardinal to the victory with her second goal of the game in the 99th minute. Amy Grady was credited with the assist.
Stanford outshot Cal, 12-8, and Cal's freshman goalkeeper, Anna Key, recorded five saves, including four in the first half, to keep the game close.
Today marked the final collegiate game for seven Bears seniors -- Yokers, Willison, Doubrava, Kim Stocklmeir, Lucy Brining, Ashley Valenzuela, and Stephanie Martling. The group helped Cal post five straight NCAA Tournament berths.
