Husky Men Fall To Top-Ranked UCLA 1-0

Nov. 7, 2003

LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - A goal in the fourth minute of the match by UCLA's Aaron Lopez proved to be the only scoring of the night as Washington men's soccer was shutout by the top-ranked Bruins, 1-0, at Drake Stadium in Los Angeles, Friday evening. The match marked the second-straight loss for the Huskies, who had yet to lose two in a row this season.

Washington falls to 10-4-2 overall and 3-4-1 against Pac-10 opponents, while UCLA improves its record to 16-1-0 overall and 8-0 in league play. Washington has been shutout in three of its four losses this year, twice now by the Bruins.

UCLA completed a season sweep over the Huskies, following a 1-0 win in Seattle on Oct. 5. The Bruins have won 14-straight matches and have posted 13 shutouts in 2003.

Lopez's first goal of the season proved to be the game-winner at the 3:08 mark. His 24-yard shot went through the hands of UW senior goalkeeper Danny Waltman for the score. Waltman grabbed seven saves on 17 shots from UCLA.

Lopez fired off a long-distance shot from 24 yards out. Washington goalkeeper Danny Waltman leaped up to grab the ball, but as he came down, he lost the handle on the ball, and it squirted out of his hands and past the plane of the goal.

UCLA goalkeeper Zach Wells was credited with the shutout and made four saves on 10 shots by the Huskies. UW juniors Casey Armstrong and C.J. Klaas led the offensive attack with three shots each. UCLA's Matt Taylor had a game-high five shots, including three on goal.

The Huskies will look to return to their winning ways when they head to Fresno State to take on the Bulldogs, Sun., Nov. 9, at 2 p.m. Washington then returns home for its regular season finale with Oregon State, Sun., Nov. 16, at 2 p.m. at Husky Soccer Field.
