Meghan Gnekow Leads Women's Basketball To Exhibition Victory

LOS ANGELES - Sophomore guard Meghan Gnekow scored 22 points to lead the USC women's basketball team to a 95-89 exhibition victory over Love & Basketball on Tuesday night in front of 316 at the Lyon Center.

Gnekow, who also led with five assists in the effort, was one of five Women of Troy who scored in double figures, including senior Rometra Craig (14 points), sophomore Rachel Woodward (10), and freshmen Chlo� Kerr (14) and Jamie Funn (12). Funn led the team with 10 rebounds

Both teams were scoreless for the first three minutes of the game, as they worked on finding their shots. Gnekow was the first to put the Trojans on the board with a layup at 15:54.

She was also the one who gave USC its first lead of the game, 39-38, with 11-seconds remaining in the first half. In the final seconds, Love & Basketball managed to tie the score when Michelle Greco hit one-of-two free throws for a 39-39 halftime score.

Despite not hitting a three-point shot in the first half, USC managed to hit three, three-pointers at the start of the second half to create a gap between the two teams. Three-point shots by Gnekow and two by Craig gave the Women of Troy an eight-point lead, 55-47, with 16:10 on the clock.

With improved shooting and ample opportunities at the free throw line, USC led by as much as 12 points, three times in the remaining minutes. The Women of Troy even fought off Love & Basketball's last-second efforts to capture a 95-89 victory to start the season.

The Women of Troy played without senior forward Ebony Hoffman, who was serving a one-game suspension for a team infraction that occurred in the spring.

USC returns to the court for its second exhibition game on Sunday, Nov. 16. The Trojans will face EV1 (Everyone's Internet) at 2 p.m. at the Lyon Center.
