Nov. 12, 2003
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Betsy Cale, a 5-10 setter at one of the top prep programs in the country, has signed a letter of intent to play volleyball at Oregon State, head coach Nancy Somera announced Wednesday.
Cale (Los Angeles/Marymount HS) is the starting setter for a team that recently finished the regular season with a 29-1 record. The team begins postseason play on Thursday in search of a fourth California state championship. Marymount is ranked No. 1 in southern California by the L.A. Times, and the team is ranked No. 3 in the nation by prepvolleyball.com.
'Betsy is athletic and hard-working, and she comes from a high school program that's one of the best in the country,' Somera said. 'She's a good competitor, and she has a strong desire to be successful. She's smart, she learns fast, and we're excited to have her.'
Cale earned all-tournament honors at Torrey Pines this season, and she was also all-tournament at the SCVA Prep National tournament in July. She was named her team's most improved player after her sophomore season. Last year, she played club volleyball for the SCVC 17-1s, and this year she will play for the South Bay Volleyball Club 18-1 team.
She has also lettered in track and softball at Marymount. Cale, who has a 4.20 GPA, has been a member of the California Scholastic Federation since her freshman year. The CIF has honored her with four scholar-athletes awards.
