  • Upcoming Games ...
  • The Cardinal return to The Farm for its last home game of the season as it hosts rival Cal on Saturday at 7:00 pm (PT). Stanford, coming off of a big 5-1 win over San Jose State, will be searching for its first conference win of the season.
  • Last Week ...
  • Stanford snapped a season-high nine-game losing skid by defeating San Jose State, 5-1. The Cardinal offense, which had shown signs of improvement in the previous weekend's games versus Washington and Oregon State, exploded for five scores, with four of them coming in the second half. The five goals by the Cardinal mark the most scored in a single game this season and the most since scoring six versus Richmond during the 2002 season (9/21/02).
  • Senior Salute ...
  • Stanford's contest versus Cal this Saturday marks the last in a Cardinal uniform for seniors Abe Geiger and Mike Wilson. During their tenure on The Farm, Geiger and Wilson have been integral players to the Stanford program. In their four seasons of play, the duo have helped the Cardinal to a 58-24-6 record (.693), a Pac-10 Championship and a National runner-up finish.
  • Geiger, Twellman Honored ...
  • Senior Abe Geiger and junior James Twellman were named to the CoSida District VIII All-Academic Men's Soccer First Team on November 6. Geiger, who was selected as a team captain for the third straight season by his teammates, is no stranger to academic success. The East Lansing, MI native earned Second Team Pac-10 All-Academic honors in his sophomore and junior seasons. Twellman is also no stranger to athletic and academic success. Twellman, a native of Chesterfield, MO, earned First Team Pac-10 All-Academic honors and was named an Honorable Mention All-Pac-10 selection as a sophomore in 2002. Geiger currently holds a 3.31 GPA in Political Science, while Twellman owns a 3.73 GPA in International Relations.

  • A quick check of the Pac-10 standings show the Cardinal at 0-9-0 in conference play. At the top of the standings is UCLA who enters the week with a 9-0-0 record, followed by Oregon State at 7-2-0, California at 4-4-1, Washington at 4-4-1 and Fresno State at 2-7-0.
  • Team Leaders ...
  • Junior Matt Janusz leads the Cardinal in goals (5) and points (12). Juniors Darren Fernandez and James Twellman co-lead the team with three assists. Fernandez, who ranks second on the team in goals (4) and points (11), collected all three of his assists in Stanford's 5-1 win at San Jose State on November 6. Fellow junior Robby Fulton leads the Cardinal in goals against average (1.46) and saves (53).

A win over the Cardinal could solidify the Bears' place in the field of 48 postseason teams ... Cal has won their last two contests, including a 2-1 overtime win over San Jose State this past weekend ... The Bears have scored 24 goals this season, while yielding 23 scores ...     COACHING STAFF Bret Simon is in his third year as Stanford's head coach and has compiled a 40-21-5 record for a .644 winning percentage, fourth-best in school history. Simon has an overall record of 136-47-14 (.726) in his ninth season as a Division I head coach. Matt Stimson is in his third year as an assistant coach on The Farm, while Tim Hanley is in his second season as the team's goalkeepers coach and Charlie Hatfield is in his first season as a volunteer assistant.

    Stanford 5, at San Jose State 1 (November 6, 2003)

    The Stanford Cardinal scored four second half goals en route to a 5-1 win over San Jose State. With the win, the Cardinal improve to 3-14-2 on the season, while the Spartans fall to 10-5-2. Stanford and San Jose State entered the break tied at 1-1. Down 1-0 late in the first half, freshman Marcus Ryan scored on a breakaway in the 43rd minute to pull the Cardinal even with the Spartans. Juniors Matt Janusz and Darren Fernandez collected assists on the play. With the scored tied 1-1 after the opening half of play, the Cardinal offense erupted for four second half goals. Fernandez gave the Cardinal the lead, which it wouldn't relinquish, just 57 seconds into the second half, blasting a shot from 10 yards out, beating San Jose State goalkeeper Tyler Tratten. Senior Mike Wilson assisted on the score. Stanford was not done, as Ryan added his second goal of the game, just over three minutes later, to make the score 3-1. On a turnover in front of the Spartans' goal, Fernandez feed Ryan who slipped the shot past Tratten for his second goal of the season. The Cardinal struck again, one minute later in the 51st minute when Fernandez feed Janusz on a breakaway to push the Cardinal lead to 4-1. Janusz would cap the scoring in the 80th minute of the game, capitalizing on a Spartan turnover with his second goal of the game and his fifth on the season. The Cardinal attacked the Spartan defense taking 15 shots compared to 10 for San Jose State. It was in the second half that Stanford turned up the offensive pressure, out shooting the hosts nine to three. Freshman goalkeeper Andrew Kartunen registered three saves for the Cardinal on the afternoon. The win was Kartunen's second win of the season, moving his record to 2-6-2 on the year.
