Arizona Beats OSU 3-1 On Senior Night
Nov. 14, 2003
CORVALLIS, Ore. - K.C. Frederic had 19 digs and Laura Collins had 48 assists on Senior Night, but Oregon State's volleyball team lost to Arizona on Friday night. Game scores were 29-31, 30-24, 30-19, and 30-25.
Both teams were looking for a win to boost their chances of receiving an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Arizona improved to 14-13 overall and 8-8 in Pac-10 play, while the Beavers dropped to 15-13 and 5-11.
It was the final home match for Frederic and Collins, the two seniors on the OSU roster, and a season-high crowd of 1,432 gave them a great sendoff.
'The crowd was great tonight. I loved having the student-athlete crowd here,' coach Nancy Somera said. 'Laura and K.C. had a great match. They were very competitive tonight.'
Allison Lawrence hit .300 with a team-high 17 kills, and she tied Frederic for the team-high with 19 digs. Amanda Eggert hit .393 with 14 kills, and Anne Watts-Roberts chipped in 10 kills. Karah Rhoades had 13 digs.
Arizona hit .343, with Kim Glass hitting .323 with a match-best 28 kills. Bre Ladd, who had seven blocks, also added 14 kills on .650 hitting.
In the end, though, it came down to serving. While Arizona actually had more service errors - 13 to OSU's 8 - the Beavers made their errors late in the match. OSU served five of its errors in game four, while the Wildcats had just two in that game. Arizona also had two aces to OSU's one in game four.
'Five service errors in game four let them off the hook,' Somera said. 'Serving and passing are where games are won and lost. We were a threat, but we just couldn't run our offense at the end.'
