UCLA Women's Golf Inks Excellent Recruiting Class
Nov. 14, 2003
The UCLA women's golf program enjoyed an outstanding signing period, securing one first-team AJGA All-American from the South Bay as well as another of the city's top prep players, the athletic department announced today.
Topping the list for Head Coach Carrie Forsyth's women's program is West High (Torrance) standout Amie Cochran, a two-time AJGA All-American. Cochran in the last year has recorded six Top 5 finishes on the AJGA circuit, including first place at the Lennar Junior at Mission Hills. She was also a member of the 2003 Canon Cup West Team and the PING Junior Solheim Cup squad. She ranks 11th among U.S. junior girls in the GolfWeek/Titleist rankings and second among players in the 2004 class.
'Amie Cochran is one of the best young players in the nation,' said Forsyth. 'She has improved her game every year in junior golf. She made her mark this past summer by winning the AJGA Mission Hills event, and by firing a final round 62 at the Raven during the AJGA event in Tucson. She will be a tremendous asset to our program in the coming years.'
Vanessa Brockett (Campbell Hall HS, Studio City, CA) completes the list of signees for the women's program. Brockett, ranked 62nd in the GolfWeek/Titleist rankings, won the 2002 and 2003 Los Angeles City Women's Championship and placed eighth in the 2003 Junior World Championship in San Diego. She also recorded two Top 10 finishes on the AJGA circuit this season.
'Vanessa Brockett is a perfect fit for UCLA,' said Forsyth. 'She is a great student, and one of the strongest local talents. She has exceptional golf abilities, and we are expecting her to be a great addition to our squad.
'We're really excited about this class of student-athletes,' Forsyth continued. 'By gaining the commitments of these two players, we have assured ourselves of continuing success. We feel very confident that our team will continue to improve every year by reaching our goals this year in the recruiting arena.
'Having Amie and Vanessa join our team is something for which we are very proud,' Forsyth said. 'I look forward to coaching these two fine players through many individual and team accomplishments in the coming years.'
