Washington Soccer Blanks No. 16 Oregon State, 1-0
Nov. 16, 2003
SEATTLE - Junior Brett Wiesner's goal in the 75th minute broke up a scoreless game and gave Washington the eventual 1-0 victory over 16th-ranked Oregon State. The win lifts Washington to 12-4-2 overall and 5-4-1 in the Pac-10 on the eve of the NCAA bracket announcement. Oregon State drops to 13-6 overall and 7-3 in the Pac-10.
The lone goal came at the 75:48 mark on a play sequence started by a long through ball by sophomore Mike Chabala. Senior Troy Ready then delivered a cross kick to Wiesner who flicked the ball into the upper-left corner of the net, just out of reach of the out-stretched goalkeeper Peter Billmeyer (12-6-0).
The win marked the sixth shutout of the season for Husky goalkeeper Danny Waltman (11-4-2) who recorded three saves on the day. Washington's defense held the Beavers to just three shots on goal and none through the first 72 minutes of play. The Huskies, meanwhile, tallied 10 shots on goal.
Washington outshot Oregon State, 19-11 and held the slight advantage over OSU in corner kicks, 5-4.
Washington must now wait until tomorrow night to learn its postseason fate. The Huskies are aiming to receive their eighth postseason berth in the last nine years. The NCAA bracket announcement will be made on Mon., Nov. 17, at 1 p.m. on ESPNews.
