Nov. 17, 2003
CORVALLIS, Ore. - -
For the second year in a row, the Oregon State men's soccer team (13-6-0 overall, 7-3-0 Pacific-10) will play the University of Portland (9-8-1) in the first round of the 48-team NCAA College Cup, this time in Corvallis on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 12 noon.
The Beavers will host a NCAA College Cup match for the first time in the history of the program.
'Anytime you get to play at home during the postseason, it's is a tremendous advantage,' OSU coach Dana Taylor said. 'Our fan support is fantastic and our players feed off of that energy.'
The Beavers were 6-1 at Lorenz Field at Valley Stadium this year.
The winner of Saturday's game travels to Seattle to face the No.10-seeded Washington Huskies (12-4-2, 5-4-1 Pac-10) on Wednesday, Nov. 26.
Last year, OSU qualified for the College Cup for the first time and lost its first-round matchup at Portland 2-0.
Portland defeated OSU 2-0 earlier this year on Sept. 7 at Merlo Field.
'Last time we played Portland, they beat us, so our guys need to look within this week,' Taylor said. 'We need to come into the game with emotion and challenge every play on the field.
'We expect this to be a great game - this has become an excellent series between two in-state schools.'
Other Pac-10 schools to make the postseason were UCLA, California and Washington.
