Iryna Vashschuk Qualifies For NCAA Cross Country Championships
Nov. 18, 2003
Portland, Ore. - USC sophomore Iryna Vashchuk ran a personal-best 20:38 to finish sixth in the 6K run at the NCAA West Regionals at Blue Lake Park on Saturday.
As a result, Vashchuk will compete at the NCAA finals as the top individual qualifier on Nov. 24 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
She's the third Trojan in as many years to qualify for the NCAA Championships, joining Sara Ellis in 2001 and Brooke Thomas in 2002. That's the longest string of NCAA qualifiers in USC women's cross country history.
Thomas, a senior, was just one spot away from qualifying, as she finished 18th in a personal-best time of 20:55.
It's the first time in over a decade that two USC women's cross country runners finished in the top 20 at a regional qualifying meet.
