Steven Jackson and Richard Seigler Comment on the Civil War
Nov. 18, 2003
Corvallis, Ore. - Oregon State players Lawrence Turner, Mitch Meeuwsen, Bill Swancutt, Trent Bray, Steven Jackson, and Richard Seigler were in attendance at Tuesday's weekly press luncheon in the Valley Football Center. The following comments are from Jackson and Seigler about the upcoming Civil War:
Your Thoughts on the emotion and intensity of the Civil War this year.
'Fortunately the game comes at a crucial point of our season, major bowl bids are on the line, and just things that we want to accomplish. We want to finish the season out with three conference wins, and we had a good start toward our goal last weekend.'
About playing at Autzen Stadium and facing the Ducks.
'Oregon is a very good football team. I think we can quiet their fans if we can come out fast like we did last week against Stanford. We know it's going to be a loud stadium at the start and there will be a lot of emotion. We want to get the lead fast and hopefully we can control some of the noise.'
You will be facing one of the better linebackers in the league in Kevin Mitchell. What type of player is he?
'Kevin is a good player, but you have to remember I go up against guys like Richard Seigler every day in practice, so I'm used to competing against very good players every day. Kevin has a nose for the ball.'
Last year you had a running conversation with Keith Lewis. What was that all about?
'He got under my skin last year, but I know what to expect this year. I'm going to try to keep that kind of thing down in this game, the officials have been pretty hard on us this season for that type of thing.'
How are you physically?
'I feel pretty good. The pounding that I'm taking is why you lift weights weekly and take care of your body in the training room. The training and the strength staffs have done a great job helping me stay healthy. I felt I haven't had to run the ball that much lately, since Derek (Anderson) has been doing such a great job. The offensive line is back on track as well, which makes my job much easier.'
Is this team playing its best football right now?
'I think we are. One week it was the offense, the next week it was the defense, but lately the whole team has come together and been really strong.'
Summarize the season.
'I think we're a good team. Our lack of discipline in a few games and penalties have cost us at times. It's been an up and down year, but we've had a lot of fun. The coaching staff is great; Coach Riley has come in here with a fun staff and a laid back approach - it's been a lot of fun to play football.'
You are just dying to say something.
'We're expanding Reser Stadium and we are going to have some extra seats, so the gates for all the Duck fans to come on over to Beaver Nation are open. We're adding seats, so if Duck fans want to make the transition to Beaver Nation, our arms are wide open. That's all I'm going to say.'
Do you want to see Oregon in their yellow uniforms?
'It doesn't matter, I know its just going to be fun game. Oregon's players are excited, we're excited. We're not worried about the bulletin board material, we just know its going to be a fun game to play.'
Do you almost feel like an honorary Oregonian, even though you are from Nevada?
'I will be watching the Civil War forever now. Every year I'm going to pay attention to this game and I always will follow it. I will also follow the Oregon State program. I definitely feel like a large part of the program and the history of the Civil War, since I have played in so many. I feel like I have helped the team to win.'
