No. 9 Cal Volleyball Tops Oregon State, 3-1
Nov. 20, 2003
BERKELEY, CA - Behind junior All-American Mia Jerkov's 32 kills, the No. 9 ranked Cal volleyball team (20-6, 11-6 Pac-10) snapped a three-match losing streak and defeated Oregon State (15-14, 5-12 Pac-10), 3-1 (26-30, 30-28, 30-21, 30-25) Thursday evening at Haas Pavilion. The Bears were also paced by sophomore Alicia Powers' career-high 17 kills.
Cal's win over the Beavers also broke a three-match home losing streak to OSU, gave the Bears back-to-back 20 win seasons for the first time since 1981-83 and provided Cal with its 11th conference win - the most league victories since 1987. It was the 11th time Jerkov had recorded 30 or more kills in a match. The OSU-Cal match will be shown on tape delay on Fox Sports Bay Area on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 1 p.m.
'It is wonderful to have won 20 matches for the second year in a row,' said Cal coach Rich Feller. 'Now we are looking to keep our momentum going and earn some more wins.'
The Bears had to come back to defeat the Beavers after losing game one, 30-26. Cal struggled with its passing in the first game, allowing six overpasses to account for six OSU kills. The Bears were able to rebound to win game two, 30-28, on a stellar 12-kill performance by Jerkov. Jerkov and Cal continued to play better in the third and fourth games, winning 30-21 and 30-25. Besides Jerkov and Powers' 32 and 17 kills, both finished with .362 and .464 hitting percentages, respectively.
The Bears will next host Oregon, Friday, Nov. 21 at 5:30 p.m. at Haas Pavilion. The Oregon-Cal match will be played prior to the Cal men's basketball game versus Cal Poly, which is slated to begin at 8 p.m.
