Beavers Sign Arand

Nov. 21, 2003

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State signed two-time league champion Brett Arand of Thurston High in Springfield to a letter of intent during this fall's early signing period, OSU head coach Joe Wells announced Friday. Arand will join the Beavers next fall after wrestling his final high school season this winter.

'I really liked the people at Oregon State a lot, and the campus is pretty cool,' Arand said of his choice.

Arand placed third at 152 pounds in the Oregon Class 4A Championships last season as a junior, losing to current OSU wrestler Kyle Larson in the state semifinals. Arand went 41-2 with 22 pins for the Colts last season after going 37-5 at 145 pounds as a sophomore; his high school coach is former Oregon State wrestler Mike Simons.

'He's technical and he's well-skilled,' Wells said of Arand. 'He's been wrestling for a long time and has a lot of savvy ... he's from a wrestling family and a good wrestling program. There's a good club program there, so by the time they get to high school they're pretty tough.'

Arand is a two-time state champion in both the Freestyle and Greco-Roman tournaments, and he earned high school All-America honors in 2002 by placing fifth in the nation in Greco-Roman. He's likely to wrestle at 157 or 165 pounds for Oregon State.
