Washington State Volleyball Wins In Five At Arizona State

TEMPE, Ariz. - The Washington State volleyball team got the monkey off it's back in more ways than one with a 3-2 road win over Arizona State at the Wells Fargo Arena Friday night.

In its ninth five-game match of the season (0-8) and only second road win of the season, WSU defeated ASU 26-30, 30-14, 26-30, 30-16, 15-9.

'It wasn't a monkey, it was a gorilla,' Cougar Head Coach Cindy Fredrick said.

WSU moves to 9-19 overall, 5-12 in Pac-10 play while Arizona State 9-17 overall, 4-13 in conference action.

Jennifer Todd and Kristen Carlson led the Cougars with a combined 27 kills and 10 blocks. Carlson added 15 digs as Zanda Bautre added 10 kills, 20 assists and a career-high seven blocks. Jen Barcus added 11 kills and six blocks. Kali Richards had 25 assists and 12 digs.

ASU was led by the 17 kills from both Natalie Harris and Kim Mehlhorn. Stephanie Kohner had 19 digs and Cheryl Anglin had 46 assists.

WSU hit .242 on the night and held ASU to .156. The Cougars out-blocked the Sun Devils 17 to 7 and ASU committed 23 service errors.

In a tight first game, the Sun Devils and Cougars were tied at 20 when ASU went on a 9 to 4 run. WSU denied the home team game point twice as Jen Barcus landed her fifth and sixth kills of this game but Kim Mehlhorn laced a kill for the 30-26 game win. ASU hit .432 in this game while the Cougars hit a solid .282.

Washington State roared out to a 17-11 lead when ASU had taken both timeouts. The Cougars out-scored the Devils 13 to 4 for the 30-14 game win, fueled by Jennifer Todd's four blocks.

Game three was knotted at 20-all when ASU put four points together for the lead. Each team had six points to finish out the game with each team committing as many hitting or serving errors and kills. ASU hit .333 and kept WSU to a .143 as the Sun Devils take the 30-26 win and the two-game lead in the match.

WSU was in the lead from the first serve in the fourth game, winning 30-16, and evening up the match at two wins each. Six blocks from WSU, two from Bautre and four from Barcus, aided the visitors cause. Cougars hit .278 in this game and held ASU to -.093.

In the fifth game, ASU took an 8-7 lead but WSU came back with five straight points and after Harris pounded a kill, the Cougs closed out the match with points from two ASU errors and a kill from Barcus.

Washington State ends the season at Arizona Saturday night.
