Seattle - Washington women's golf coach Mary Lou Mulflur announced that Kim Shin has signed a national letter of intent and will play golf for the Huskies next fall. A senior at Shorewood High School, Shin is the defending Class 4A high school state champion.
The Pacific Northwest Golf Association recently named her its Girls Player of the Year for 2003. Shin was recognized by the Washington Junior Golf Association as its Player of the Year in 2003.
Last summer Shin won the 2003 Junior America's Cup qualifier tournament and the 2003 World State qualifier. She finished in the top-10 at the 2003 Junior America's Cup and reached the round of 64 at the 2003 U.S. Girls Junior Championship. A year earlier, she defeated Hawaii's Michelle Wie in a 19-hole match at the 2002 US Girls' Junior Championship.
Shin has won the Jack Baty Award as player of the year for the Washington Junior Golf Association in both 2002 and 2003. Last year she topped the WJGA points standings.
As a freshman at Shorewood, Shin placed fourth at the state high school golf championships. She was the runner-up as a sophomore and took medalist honors last spring after a four-hole playoff.
