Andrew Jacobson Selected to U.S. National Futsal Team
Dec. 3, 2003
BERKELEY, Calif. - Cal freshman Andrew Jacobson has been selected as a late addition to the U.S. National Futsal Team for its Futsal Goal Cup competition. The team will compete in a four-team international tournament from Dec. 5-7 at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, Calif. The U.S. will take on CONCACAF rivals Canada, Guatemala and Mexico during the tournament, which will serve as preparation for 2004 CONCACAF qualifying play next year in Costa Rica.
Jacobson joins a team mainly comprised of players from the Major Indoor Soccer League. He will be by far the youngest player on head coach Keith Tozer's squad.
Coach Kevin Grimes was excited to hear one of his players would be gaining international experience, albeit unconventional, this offseason.
'Andrew's selection to the U.S. National Futsal Team is great news for Cal Soccer,' said Grimes. 'Anytime a player can represent his country in international competition is always a great honor. This experience of Andrew being the only college player selected will further his development tremendously.'
Futsal is a sport that is a derivative of soccer and played with five-man teams on a basketball-style court, with no walls and a low-bouncing ball, unlike the traditional sport of U.S. indoor soccer played with six-man squads and walls.
