NEW YORK, N.Y. - -
The accolades for the Oregon State men's soccer team continued on Thursday when senior forward Alan Gordon was named as one of 54 college invitees selected to participate in the adidas Major League Soccer Player Combine Jan. 11-13 at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.
Gordon is the first Beaver to be invited to the MLS combine.
'Oregon State and the men's soccer program are extremely excited for Alan and his opportunity to play in the MLS,' OSU coach Dana Taylor said. 'We were fortunate to have had Alan as a part our program for the last two years, and we look forward to him being an important part of the MLS SuperDraft.'
MLS general managers and members of all 10 MLS coaching staffs will be in attendance to scout the talent at the combine leading up to the 2004 SuperDraft, which will be held on Jan. 16 at the Charlotte (N.C.) Convention Center.
The participants, who will later be joined by select Project-40 players, have been divided into four squads for the three-day round-robin tournament. The four teams will play double-headers on the mornings of Jan. 11-13.
Gordon has been selected to play on the adidas Aveiro squad; the remaining three squads are the adidas F50, adidas Predator Pulse and the adidas Supernova.
The field of players was determined by a panel of Division I coaches in conjunction with MLS coaches and the consultation of select Division II, Division III and NAIA coaches.
The names of the Project-40 signings will be announced at a later date.
Twenty-five of the first 30 selections in last year's MLS SuperDraft attended the 2003 adidas MLS Player Combine.
A first-team All-Pacific-10 performer at OSU as a junior and senior, Gordon (Gilbert, Ariz./Yavapai Junior College) was third in the Pac-10 with 25 regular-season points this year and ranks third on the school's all-time points list with 59 after only two seasons.
As a junior, Gordon led the Pac-10 with 34 points in his first season as a Beaver.
Of the 54 invitees, 49 are from Division I programs, two from Division II, two from Division III and one from the NAIA ranks.
