Cardinal Advance To Sweet Sixteen With Win Over Pacific

Stanford, Calif. - Junior outside hitter Ogonna Nnamani notched a match-high 27 kills while hitting .415 as the fifth-ranked Stanford women's volleyball team defeated Pacific, 3-0, tonight in Maples Pavilion to advance to the Sweet Sixteen. Game scores were 30-26, 34-32, 30-25.
The Cardinal improve to 25-6 on the year while the Tigers end their season with a record of 18-14.
Stanford advances to the Long Beach Regional, hosted by Long Beach State, which is to be held, December 12-13 at The Pyramid. The Cardinal will face the winner of the Washington-Utah match on Friday.
The two teams remained close early in game one as Pacific took a slim 15-13 lead into the media timeout. Stanford called their first timeout trailing 14-18 after a Cardinal hitting error. The Tigers would call their first timeout after a Katie Goldhahn service ace closed the gap to 19-21. A UOP hitting error and four consecutive Ogonna Nnamani kills gave the Cardinal a 24-21 lead. Stanford reached game point on a kill by Kristin Richards at 29-25. Nnamani closed out the game with her 12 kill on the night at 30-26.
Game two was as closely contested as game one with the Tigers holding a 15-14 edge at the media timeout. The two teams battled back and forth but Pacific reached game point at 29-26 on a kill by Jennifer Joines. Stanford held off three game points to tie the game at 29-all on a UOP hitting error. Pacific would get two more game point chances but the Cardinal would again tie up the game. On Stanford's third game point at 33-32, a Kristin Richards' kill gave the Cardinal the 34-32 win and a two-game lead in the match.
Stanford opened up a 15-9 lead in game three after another Nnamani kill. The Cardinal led 20-14 as Pacific took their first timeout after a Tiger hitting error. A kill by Sara Dukes would put Stanford up 25-20 a force the final UOP timeout. A kill by Jennifer Harvey put the Cardinal at match-point leading 29-24 and a kill by Katie Goldhahn closed out the match at 30-25.
Freshman outside hitter Kristin Richards recorded a double-double on the night with 13 kills and a match-high 14 digs. Setter Katie Goldhahn added 37 assists and 10 digs as well. Middle blocker Jennifer Harvey led the match with six blocks while Leahi Hall tacked on two service aces.
Pacific was led by Jennifer Joines' 21 kills and five blocks. Joanna Rentz led the squad with 12 digs on the evening.
