LOS ANGELES - The top-seeded USC women's volleyball team defeated New Hampshire, 3-0 (30-17, 30-18, 30-17), on Friday night in the first round of the 2003 NCAA Championships in front of 889 at the Lyon Center. The Women of Troy now advance to the second round to face 15th-ranked Loyola Marymount on Saturday, Dec. 6, at 6 p.m.

Loyola Marymount defeated Cal State Northridge in the earlier match, 3-0 (30-21, 30-22, 30-26).

Junior middle blocker Emily Adams led the Trojans with 12.5 points thanks to a match-high nine kills and five blocks. New Hampshire's Alyson Coler had a team-best 10 points and 10 kills, but hit at a .189 clip. Teammate Karen Harrington led with a .455 attack percentage (5-0-11) as only one of two players to finish above .200 for the match. Libero Sasha Scott collected 14 digs in the effort.

USC spread the offense, with all players seeing time on the court.

'It was fun playing tonight, but New Hampshire certainly made us work hard,' said USC head coach Mick Haley. 'I feel we play well when we're having fun. Our focus now, though, lies in our next opponent.'

'I think we played well tonight, but USC is just that good,' said New Hampshire head coach Jill Hirschinger. 'We played good defense and played our hearts out. We certainly weren't coming down here to lose, but that is USC for you.'

With the win, USC improves to 30-0 overall, while New Hampshire ends it's season at 23-12.
