Statement from Commissioner Tom Hansen Regarding the Final BCS Standings

Dec. 7, 2003

STATEMENT FROM PACIFIC-10 COMMISSIONER TOM HANSEN REGARDING THE FINAL BCS STANDINGS:

'Congratulations to Oklahoma and LSU on their fine seasons. Both have excellent football teams. The BCS will have a premier matchup in the Sugar Bowl, and the Rose Bowl will have an outstanding game matching the polls' No. 1 USC and No. 4 Michigan.

'However, it is most unfortunate that the other elements of the BCS Standings have overruled the two polls and taken USC out of the National Championship Game because it will generate criticism of the BCS system, which the Pac-10 has consistently supported. A similar result involving the Pac-10 occurred in the 2001 season, when Oregon finished second in both polls but was not selected for the National Championship Game.

'As always, the BCS will review this year's results and determine whether changes in the Standings structure seem warranted prior to the 2004 college football season.'
