Four Bruins Selected To NSCAA All-Region Team
Dec. 8, 2003
Four seniors on the UCLA men's soccer team were selected to the NSCAA All-Far West Region First Team - goalkeeper Zach Wells (Costa Mesa, CA), defender Leonard Griffin (Palmdale, CA), midfielder Adolfo Gregorio (Hilmar, CA) and forward Matt Taylor (Irvine, CA).
Wells set new school records this season in goals against average (0.52), single-season victories (20) and career saves (269). He posted 11 shutouts on the year, the most by a Bruin since 1995 and the fourth-most in school history. He was a first-team All-Pac-10 selection and a second-team Academic All-American. Wells earned second-team All-Far West honors a year ago.
Griffin helped the Bruins record a school record-tying team goals against average of 0.52 and, along with Wells, was one of just two players to start all 23 games. Defensively, the first-team All-Pac-10 defender contributed to the team's 11 shutouts, the fourth-highest total in UCLA history, and offensively, he added four assists.
Gregorio led UCLA with 14 assists in 2003, ranking third on UCLA's all-time single-season list. He also scored four goals for a total of 22 points. He earned first-team All-Pac-10 honors for the third consecutive year and is a nominee for the M.A.C. Hermann Trophy. Last season, he earned third-team All-Far West honors.
Taylor, the 2003 Pac-10 Player of the Year, led the Bruins with 14 goals and 36 points. He also earned first-team All-Pac-10 honors and honorable mention Pac-10 All-Academic acclaim. Taylor tied the school record with four multiple goal games and two hat tricks this season. He also set a new record for career hat tricks with three.
UCLA's four all-region selections were the most by any team in the Far West this year.
