Bruins Soccer Players Receive More Honors

Dec. 17, 2003

UCLA soccer players continued to receive more post-season honors, as forward Chad Barrett (Beaverton, Ore.) and defenders Brandon Owens (Murietta, Calif.) and Kiel McClung (Palmdale, Calif.) were selected to the College Soccer News All-Freshman teams, and senior midfielder/defender Dru Hoshimiya (South Pasadena, Calif.) earned first-team NSCAA/adidas Scholar All-West Region honors.

Barrett was the Pac-10 Co-Freshman of the Year and a second-team all-conference selection. He ranked second on the team with 10 goals, eight assists and 28 points and totaled the most points by a Bruin freshman since Joe-Max Moore scored 32 in 1990.

Owens was the only freshman selected to the All-Pac-10 first team. A 20-game starter and two-goal scorer, he was a key member of the Bruin defensive unit that tied the school record with a team goals against average of 0.52.

McClung started 16 of 23 games played and scored three goals, two of which were game-winners. He also added two assists. He was a College Soccer News Team of the Week selection on Sept. 28 after scoring the game-winner against Loyola Marymount.

Hoshimiya adds to his resume another academic award after already receiving CoSIDA Academic All-District and Pac-10 All-Academic first team acclaim. Hoshimiya had three goals and one assist in 21 games played and 18 started and earned honorable mention All-Pac-10 honors.
