Cal Baseball Signs Four Athletes to Letters of Intent
Dec. 17, 2003
BERKELEY, CA - The University of California baseball team has signed four athletes to national letters of intent - featuring a pitcher/outfielder, a shortstop and two right-handed pitchers - it was announced today by Cal head coach David Esquer.
Esquer and his staff signed right-handed pitcher/outfielder Jason Corder, a 6-2, 195-pounder from Mission Viejo (Capistrano Valley HS); Kyle Spraker, a 5-10, 175-pound shortstop from Portola Valley (St. Francis HS); Danny Campbell, a 6-2, 175-pound junior right-hander from Santa Rosa (Santa Rosa Junior College); and Nick Tess, a 6-0, 175-pound right-hander from Alamo (Monte Vista HS).
As a junior in 2003, Corder was All-South Coast League, All-Orange County and All-CIF at Capistrano Valley High School, batting .391 with 12 home runs. On the mound, he was 2-1 with a 1.62 ERA, five saves and 36 strikeouts in 30.3 innings pitched. As a sophomore, Corder hit .500 with 11 home runs, and as a pitcher, went 7-3 with two saves, a 2.14 ERA and had 88 strikeouts in 72.0 innings. Corder is listed as the sixth-best prospect in California, and the No. 22 top prospect in the nation, by Baseball America.
Sparker was an All-WCAL shortstop last spring, batting .347 with three home runs and 16 stolen bases for league champion St. Francis High School. He also played in the 2003 North/South California State All-Star Showcase and is ranked the nation's 162nd top prospect in TeamOneBaseball.
Campbell is a junior college standout from Santa Rosa JC, where last spring he was All-Northern California and Bay Valley West Conference Pitcher of the Year. He set a school record with 10 wins, going 10-1 with 80 strikeouts and a 2.67 ERA. Tess also had impressive statistics in 2003, going 7-2 with 80 strikeouts in 78.7 innings at Monte Vista High School
'We are real excited to get these four players,' said Esquer. 'We feel these athletes will fit in nicely with our No. 5 nationally ranked recruiting class (in Baseball America) we signed last fall, and with some additional players we are looking to sign to our program later.'
