UCLA Bests Fresno State, 69-56

Los Angeles, Calif. - UCLA used a season-high 23 points by Nikki Blue to post a 69-56 win over Fresno State this afternoon in Pauley Pavilion in the first women's game played on Nell and John Wooden Court.
Fresno State, which trailed 35-31 at halftime, scored the first basket of the second half on a Mindy Clark layup to cut the Bruin lead to two points at 19:24 on the clock. However, the Bruins ran off the next 13 points in the contest to take a 48-33 lead and control of the game. Fresno broke the ice on a Cophie Moore free throw at the 12:54 mark but would get no closer than 12 points the rest of the contest. The Bruins took their largest lead of the day at 60-40 with 9:54 remaining on the clock.
Blue, who had 17 of her points in the first half, had four points during the Bruin run. She also had nine assists and six steals. Julia Pitts added four of her season-high tying 13 points during that stretch. She and Blue tied for game-high rebound honors with seven caroms each. Reserve guard Ortal Oren scored a career-best 11 points as a total of three Bruins reached double figures. The Bruin bench chipped in with a total of 29 points for the game.
Fresno State, which fell to 5-4 on the year, was led by guard Veronica Mack, who scored 19 points, including five baskets from three-point range. She was the lone Bulldog in double figures for the ball game.
The Bruins squared their record at 4-4 on the season with the win over Fresno. UCLA will open up Pac-10 conference play in their next game on Sunday, December 28 in the Sports Arena against USC at 2 p.m. The team returns to Pauley Pavilion on December 30 to host nationally ranked Ohio State at 7 p.m.
