Tedford Press Conference, McArthur Doubtful
Dec. 24, 2003
McArthur, a second-team All-American, broke his right forearm at practice Sunday, during a routine passing drill. The fluke incident may leave the Bears without their star pass catcher, who ended the regular season just 16 yards shy of the all-time Pac-10 record of 1520 receiving yards, set by USC's Johnny Morton in 1993.
'It is sad to see this happen to a guy that has come such a long way in improving his work ethic,' Tedford said. 'Anytime you put this much energy into something and you don't get the opportunity to finish it, it is disappointing. Above all I think he feels like he let his teammates down, but we'll rally behind him and pick him up.'
The following are the rest of Tedford's quotes from the conference:
'We have had very productive practices since we've been down here. I believe the players are excited and ready to play a game.'
On Aaron Rodgers;
'He is a very gifted guy, he has all the intangibles especially leadership and intelligence. What I am most impressed with is his comprehension of the offense in such a short amount of time. He has a great mind for the game. He has a tremendous career ahead of him.'
On wide receiver core minus McArthur:
'It's unfortunate what happened to Geoff, but someone will step up.
On the game:
'This is a new game. It doesn't matter what happened earlier in the year. We have both had time off and lots of time to prepare. It will be two really good teams battling it out on Friday.'
On Va. Tech's run game:
'Our main philosophy is to stop the run. We need to gang tackle. I don't know if we will stop Kevin Jones, but we'll try to slow him down.'
On Va. Tech's tradition:
'I know they have had a great run. Coach Beamer has recruited well and has been consistent. That is hard to do these days. They have built a great tradition and they are recognized as one of the top teams in the country.'
'We have talked about how we are representing the Pac-10 and the university. We don't want to fall into the trap of just being happy to be here. We want to win the football game for us and all that we represent.'
