Oregon State's Shannon Howell Named Player of the Week

OREGON STATE JUNIOR SHANNON HOWELL NAMEDPAC-10 WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF WEEK

WALNUT CREEK, Calif.-- OREGON STATE junior gurard Shannon Howell has been named the Pac-10 Women's Basketball Player of the Week for Dec. 29- Jan. 4, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.

Howell, from Los Angeles, Calif., averaged 19.3 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 2.0 steals in a trifecta of wins as OSU defeated California (Dec.29), UCLA (Jan. 2), and USC (Jan. 4). In three games, she hit 27-of-35 from the free throw line (.771), and shot a combined .359 from the field (14-of-39).

In the 70-67 road win over the Golden Bears on Dec. 29, Howell scored 12 points and pulled down seven rebounds, helping OSU break a seven-game Pac-10 road losing skid. Back at home in the 82-68 topping of UCLA on Jan. 2, she scored a team-high 22 points to go with four assists on the night. In the 72-67 home win over USC on Jan. 4, she again led the Beavers in scoring with 24 points.

Howell, a transfer from the University of Nebraska, became eligible due to Division I transfer rules on Dec. 27, 2003, and is averaging 22.5 points and four boards per game since.

Oregon State is riding a three-game winning streak and is off to its first 3-1 start in Conference play since 1995-96. The Beavers travel to rival Oregon for a Civil War matchup Saturday night.

The Player of the Week honor is Howell's first and the 50th all-time selection for Oregon State.
