Fatigued Beavers Finish Fifth At Super Six Challenge
Jan. 9, 2004
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - After travelling for almost 48 hours to get to Alabama, the 11th-ranked Oregon State gymnastics team was tired but determined as it finished fifth at the Super Six Challenge with a 193.775 Friday night.
No. 3 Alabama won with a 196.725, followed by No. 7 Florida at 195.950. No. 3 Georgia took third with a 195.550, and No. 13 Oklahoma was fourth with a 195.275. No. 18 Denver took sixth with a 193.600.
OSU had to count three misses, but coach Tanya Chaplin said she was impressed with how her team competed after the long journey to Alabama.
'I'm actually more proud of this start than any other team we've had because of the way they fought and showed their character,' she said.
The Beavers left Corvallis at 7 p.m. Tuesday to catch an early flight out of Portland on Wednesday morning. However, that flight was cancelled because of weather, and the Beavers waited in the airport for 10 hours before boarding a bus that would take them to Seattle for a 6:30 flight the next morning. OSU finally arrived in Tuscaloosa at 6:15 p.m. central time Thursday night.
'I'm very proud of the way they fought from event to event. They were tremendously tired, but they didn't give in. That they were able to travel and still fight the way they did shows there's a lot of potential in this team,' coach Tanya Chaplin said. 'Some of our missed were at the end of our routines, and I know that's because they were tired. They weren't clean and weren't even as polished as they were at our intrasquad, but I'm extremely proud of them.'
Thrse Videan and Chelsea Plourde got OSU's season off to a solid start with 9.75 and 9.775 marks on bars, respectively, but three of the next four competitors struggled. Both Heidi Goehring and Annie Campbell fell on the dismounts, and Tanya Ricioli-Hebron also had problems with her dismount as OSU finished with a 48.225. Chrissy Lamun, the fourth competitor in the lineup, had the team's top score with a 9.80.
The Beavers bounced back with a six-for-six effort on beam, with Lamun, Ricioli-Hebron, Plourde and Campbell all scoring 9.825 marks. OSU also counted Elaine Yoder's 9.775, to score a 49.075 after dropping Angela Morales' 9.70 lead-off score.
Campbell turned in OSU's top score of the night with her 9.85 on the team's final floor routine. Morales added a 9.775, Plourde had a 9.725 and Videan a 9.60. Still, the Beavers had a to count a fall, as Lamun fell on her opening tumbling run and Ricioli-Hebron had a fall on her final pass.
Plourde led the vaulters with a 9.775 on her yurchenko full, and OSU got a 9.675 out of Heather Justus. The Beavers also counted 9.65s from Campbell and Videan and a 9.55 from Morales.
Plourde finished sixth in the all-around with a 39.100 in her first collegiate competition.
