Stanford Can't Quite Hold On Against CSU Bakersfield

Jan. 11, 2004

Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford Cardinal (3-4) nearly fought back against 23rd-ranked Bakersfield, led by Luis Vendrell's (149) clutch pin in the third period of his match. Stanford led going into the final match, but CSUB's Christian Arellano notched the decisive pin against Brian Perry (165) to take the dual by a final score of 21-18.

In a great day of wrestling, it seemed the Cardinal had secured the victory after Vendrell led a comeback. After two periods of little action, Luis Vendrell wrestled Anthony Baza to the mat at 5:22 to tie the team score. Matt Gentry's 10-5 decision over 19th-ranked Brian Cobb then gave Stanford the lead. Gentry retained his perfect record this season, and hopes to improve on his fifth rank in the nation. Unfortunately, after Perry seemed to have the upper hand in the final match he was pinned by Arellano with 2:35 left, and the dual was over.

The dual featured some of the top wrestlers in the nation, on both sides of the mat. Fifth-ranked Gentry and 20th-ranked Brad Metzler (141) both took home solid decisions, but the Bakersfield Roadrunners featured stars of their own. At 197 pounds, fourth-ranked Matt Monteiro pinned Stanford's Ian Bork in the first period of their match, to give CSUB their first points of the day. In the lightweight division, Tanner Gardner fell to fourth ranked Efren Ceballos in a closely fought 7-6 match. Gardner continues to compete at a high level against the top wrestlers in the nation. Paul Gross (133) hoped to turn things around for the Cardinal, but faced ninth-ranked Matt Sanchez, who took an early 7-1 lead in the match. Gross fought back to within 11-9, but could not take Sanchez down in the closing seconds.

The Stanford Cardinal came out strong, with opening decisions by Imad Kharbush (174) and John Garfinkel (184). After Monteiro's pin of Ian Bork, Shawn Ritzenthaler (285) tried to regain the lead but lost an intense, back-and-forth match against Eric Parker. A last-second call by the referee gave Parker the 7-6 victory.

The Stanford Cardinal next wrestles the University of Oregon this Thursday, January 15 at 7:00 pm. Come support the Cardinal at Burnham Pavilion.
