Arizona Men's Tennis Opens Season Ranked No. 37

TUCSON, Ariz. - The Arizona men's tennis team will open the 2004 dual match season with the preseason ranking of No. 37 as administered by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Individually, senior Tom Lloyd garnered the No. 84 spot, the team's only singles ranking.
The Wildcats will pick up this season where they left off last season. Arizona finished the dual match season last year ranked No. 37 and will begin this season in the same position. Last year's squad finished with a 9-11 record and a trip to the NCAA Championships. This season, the team will return all nine men including eight letterwinners and has added four new members to make the team's 13-man roster. During the fall, the Wildcats had several strong showings including sophomore Daniel Andrus who earned a spot in the semi-finals of the back draw at the Omni Hotel Region VIII Fall Championships. Sophomore Roger Matalonga earned a four-match winning streak at Laguna Nigel and a fall record of 6-3.
Individually for the Wildcats, Lloyd earned a singles ranking of No. 84. Lloyd finished the fall with a record of 7-3 including two wins over ranked opponents. Lloyd defeated No. 30 Alejandro Tejerina of Tulsa, 6-3, 3-0 retired, and No. 99 Khaled El Dorry of Texas A&M, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (6).
The Wildcats will open the 2004 dual match season at home against Northern Arizona on Jan. 19. First serve is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.
