Jan. 14, 2004
LOS ANGELES - Coming off one of the most successful seasons in recent program history, the USC women's tennis team has been tabbed No. 6 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) in its preseason rankings released on Tuesday, Jan 13.
Last year's squad, guided by four-time All-American Jewel Peterson, advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals and finished the season ranked No. 5 with a 22-6 overall record. But despite losing four seniors, the 2004 Women of Troy have reloaded and will boast a youthful, deep and talented roster.
Topping the preseason list this year is defending NCAA Champion Florida who received 24 first-place votes. Second-ranked Stanford garnered nine first-place votes, followed by No. 3 California, No. 4 Duke and No. 5 Georgia. USC, Washington, William & Mary, North Carolina and Tennessee round out the women's top 10. With UCLA coming in at 11th and Arizona State ranked 19th, the Pac-10 boasts six teams in the top 20.
Junior Luana Magnani will be looked to emerge as the team's No. 1 singles player for the Trojans this season. She begins the year ranked 24th in the singles preseason poll. Sophomore teammate Carine Vermeulen is the only other USC player ranked. Vermeuelen is tabbed 70th. In doubles, Magnani and Vermeulen are ranked 42nd.
USC opens the 2004 season this week at the Pac-10 Indoor Championships in Seattle, Wash., Jan. 16-18. The dual match season begins Thursday, Jan. 22, when the Women of Troy host Long Beach State at 1:30 p.m. at Marks Tennis Stadium.
