Stanford To Compete At Sherwood Cup

COMING UP: Stanford travels to Thousand Oaks, CA to compete at the Sherwood Cup this Friday through Monday ... Stanford will play its first dual match of the 2004 season at Tulsa on January 24th before returning to The Farm to host Hawai'i on January 27th.
STANFORD IN THE RANKINGS: The Stanford University men's tennis team is ranked No. 5 in the country in the 2004 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) preseason poll released on Tuesday, January 13th. The Cardinal received 1,696 votes, just 22 shy of Florida and Vanderbilt, who tied for third in the preseason poll with 1,718 votes. Illinois, the 2003 NCAA team champions, received 19 first place votes and 1,780 overall votes to edge Baylor, who tallied 13 first place and 1,777 overall ... Three Stanford players are listed among the top 100 players in the nation. Sophomore KC Corkery, a 2003 All-American, is ranked No. 43 in the ITA singles preseason rankings, followed by junior Sam Warburg at No. 71 and sophomore James Pade at No. 82. Corkery and Pade also combine to form one of the best doubles teams in the country, coming in at No. 10 in the preseason rankings.
CARDINAL NOTES: Last season, Stanford went 25-4 en route to winning its third Pac-10 Championship in the last four years. The Cardinal advanced to the semifinals before falling to eventual national champion Illinois, 4-2 ... In addition to being named an All-American in 2003, KC Corkery was also named the 2003 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year and ITA West Region Rookie of the Year ... Last season, Corkery, Sam Warburg and James Pade combined to post an 86-15 (.851) overall singles record ... Redshirt senior Carter Morris is the 2003-04 team captain ... Head Coach Dick Gould, who will retire at the end of the season and assume the position of Director of Tennis, was named the 2003 Pac-10 Coach of the Year. Gould has led Stanford to an NCAA record 17 men's tennis team championships.
NEW FACES: The Cardinal welcome four newcomers to the squad in freshman Nico Martinez, Eric McKean, Chris Rasmussen and James Wan. Wan is the 2001 Junior National Champion, while Rasmussen was the top rated player in Northern California in his age group (18s). McKean is an excellent doubles player, winning three Southern California doubles championships (14s, 16s, 18s), while Martinez is an outstanding athlete who is expected to continue to develop into a fine player.
