SEATTLE, Wash. - Washington's top women's tennis players started off the New Year in strong fashion on the first day of the annual Pac-10 Indoor Championships at the Lloyd Nordstrom Tennis Center Friday. Play continued late into Friday night but in early results the seventh-ranked Huskies swept their first round matches in the top two singles flights, led by senior Claire Carter (Nottingham, England) and junior Dea Sumantri (Jakarta, Indonesia) who moved forward in the premier singles draw.

Carter and Sumantri took very different routes to arrive in the quarterfinals. Carter, ranked No. 35 nationally, rallied from down a set to pull the upset over 20th-ranked Lauren Barnikow of Stanford, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1. Carter will face Daniella Bercek from UCLA, who failed to drop a game in her first match, in tonight's quarterfinals. It was an easier story for the 49th-ranked Sumantri who advanced via a walkover past Luana Magnani of USC. Late tonight Sumantri will face the flight's third-seeded player Jackie Carlton of UCLA who currently resides at No. 17 nationally.

The Huskies continued their successful run in the second singles flight. Three women advanced led by top seeded freshman Saskia Nauenberg (Santa Cruz, Calif.), ranked No. 90 nationally. Nauenberg, senior Erin Hoe, and sophomore Dinka Hadzic (Split, Croatia) all advanced through their first round matches in straight sets. Hoe (Mililani, Hawaii) then followed up with another easy victory, 6-3, 6-2 over Alex McGoodwin of UCLA to move into Saturday's semifinals. Nauenberg lost a tough three-setter in her quarterfinal appearance to Cal's Jieun Jacobs, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, while Hadzic was still on the court. In the third and fourth singles flights the Huskies registered their only win thanks to sophomore Stephanie Svanfeldt (Belvedere, Calif.) who was taken to a second set tiebreak before prevailing 6-3, 7-6 (3) over Zorana Roganovic of Washington State.

The tournament continues through Sunday with doubles play and consolation singles getting underway Saturday. Washington has five doubles teams entered in the tournament's two flights, with Claire Carter and Dea Sumantri earning the third seed in the top flight. Also slated for top flight action are the duo of Erin Hoe and Saskia Nauenberg. All singles and doubles championship matches will be held Sunday, January 18th beginning at 9 a.m.
