Arizona Swimming and Diving falls to Cal

Berkeley, Calif.- The Arizona men's and women's swimming and diving teams posted their first loses of the season Friday in a dual meet against California. The No. 8 women of Cal defeated the No. 6 Wildcats, 152-148, and the No. 7 Arizona men's team fell to the No. 4 Bears, 169-118.
On the diving boards for the women, freshman Mary Yarrison swept the competition winning the three-meter diving event with 308.475 points and the one-meter with 276.825 points. Senior Jennifer Hess placed third on the three-meter and second on the one-meter with 246.675 points. Senior Daniela Bemme took second place on the three-meter with 267.375 points.
Senior Josh Anderson was successful for the men's diving team winning the one-meter event with 287.85 points and placing second on the three-meter. Senior Alex Vollelunga also placed twice in the competition by posting a score of 279.9 for second place on the one-meter, and third place on the three-meter board.
While the women's team was unable to pull out a victory, there were many notable performances from a few Wildcat swimmers. Senior Jessica Wagner won first place in two events, the 100 breaststroke (1:09.04), and the 200 breaststroke (2:30.03). Junior Jessica Hayes took first place in the 200 backstroke (2:08.57 and second in the 200 freestyle (2:00.34). Junior Emily Mason posted a first place win in the 200 butterfly (2:12.76), and freshman Whitney Myers was first in the 200 Individual Medley (2:15.76).
The Arizona men's team concluded the meet by winning the 400 freestyle relay made up of sophomores Lyndon Ferns and Simon Burnett, senior Eric La Fleur and junior Byron Jeffers with a time of 3:21.78. Returning to the Wildcats after training for the 2004 Olympic games in Britain, NCAA champion Simon Burnett posted the only individual win for the Wildcats in the 200 freestyle (1:50.06). Burnett was second in the 400 freestyle (3:54.90), with sophomore Tyler DeBerry not far behind in third (4:00.85). Senior Juan Veloz took second place in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:59.55.
The Wildcats will resume competition on Saturday, Jan. 24, when they travel to Stanford to take on the Cardinal. Dual meet action will begin at 10 a.m. (PST) in the Avery Aquatic Center.
