Cal Defeats Arizona, 152-148
Jan. 23, 2004
Berkeley, Calif. - The No. 8 California women's swimming team remains undefeated following a 152-148 victory over No. 6 Arizona at the Spieker Aquatics Complex in Berkeley Friday afternoon. With the win, the Golden Bears are now a perfect 5-0 in dual meets this season.
Two undefeated teams met today and both almost left the pool undefeated. With one race left in the meet, the 400-freestyle relay, Cal had 139 points to Arizona's 144. With a second- and third-place finish in the relay, Arizona would have tied with Cal at 150 points each in the meet. However, Cal pulled it out with a first-place finish by its A team (seniors Natalie Coughlin, Danielle Becks, and Micha Burden, and junior Lauren Medina) at 3:44.42 and a third-place finish by its B team (sophomore Ashley Chandler, freshman Erin Reilly, junior Emma Palsson, and junior Keiko Amano).
In her final home meet as a Golden Bear, Coughlin posted three wins, as she touched the wall first in the 50 freestyle (25.72), 100 freestyle (55.52) and 100 butterfly (1:00.05).
Other individual winners for the Bears included Reilly in the 800 free (8:32.70), Medina in the 200 free (1:59.89), sophomore Helen Silver in the 100 backstroke (1:09.04), and Chandler in the 400 free (4:11.48).
Notably, Becks finished second to Coughlin in the 50 free (26.25) and the 100 free (56.72). Silver finished second in the 200 back (2:11.21) and senior Natalie Griffith finished second in the 200 IM.
Arizona's Mary Yarrison swept the one- and three-meter diving events scoring a 276.825 on the one meter and a 308.475 on the three meter. Arizona took first and second in both events, but Cal's freshman Lila Korpell did come in third in the one meter (241.800).
Cal hosts No. 16 Arizona State tomorrow before going on the road for the remainder of the season.
