Gehring Wins Men's Shot Put With NCAA PQ

PULLMAN, Wash. -- Washington State University senior, Tim Gehring, won the men's shot put with an NCAA Provisional Qualifying throw of 61-feet, 5 3/4 inches, Saturday at the WSU Open Indoor Track & Field Meet, held at the Indoor Practice Facility on the Pullman campus.
Gehring, from Kettle Falls, Wash., surpassed his lifetime-best mark by four feet and his 18.74m/61-5 3/4 throw was sixth-best in school history. His mark was one of seven meet records either broken or tied Saturday.
Washington State women recorded wins in six events while the Cougar men grabbed three wins at the meet which also featured competitors from Idaho, Eastern Washington, Whitworth, Community Colleges of Spokane, and area track enthusiasts.
Several former collegiate stars from the area grabbed wins Saturday including former Cougar All-Americans Ellannee Richardson (800m) and Arend Watkins (60m hurdles). Former Vandal Angela Whyte won the 60m dash in 7.54 seconds, bettering her meet record from 2003 by two/one-hundredths of a second. Olympian Dan O'Brien competed in the meet as part of his training for the 2004 Olympic Trials.
Multi-events specialist Diana Pickler (sophomore, Sasche, Texas) won both the 60m hurdles (8.59) and the long jump (5.60m/18-4 1/2). WSU sophomore Nicole Hatcher (Kennewick, Wash.) won the 200m dash (25.59) and placed second in the 60m dash (7.62).
Other WSU women winners included Marie Muai, who Friday night broke her own school record in the 20# weight throw (19.10m/62-8), Robin Mikesh in the high jump with a PR of 1.70m/5-7, and Tamara Diles in the pole vault (.400m/13-1 1/2).
Cougar men grabbing wins in addition to Gehring were Matt Alverson (senior, Everett, Wash.) in the high jump (1.95m/6-4 3/4), and Paul Nicoletti (junior, Snohomish, Wash.) in the pole vault with a PR of 5.00m/16-4 3/4.
WSU hosts Cal, Cal State Northridge and Idaho in a team competition next weekend at the Cougar Indoor Invitational.
