Stanford Upends No. 24 Cal Poly

Jan. 24, 2004

San Luis Obispo, Calif. - The Stanford wrestling team won the last five straight individual bouts to register a 20-12 come from behind victory over no. 24 Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo last night. The victory was Stanford's first over Cal Poly in four years, and takes the Cardinal to a 5-4 record, 2-2 in the Pac-10.

The dual began at 184 pounds, where #13 Ryan Halsey scored a 7-3 decision over Stanford's John Garfinkel. The Mustangs increased their dual lead when Ralph Garcia tallied a 7-2 decision over Ian Bork (197). Heavyweight Shawn Ritzenthaler of Stanford posted Stanford's first victory of the evening, avenging last season's loss to NCAA Qualifier Dan Howe. Ritzenthaler put together a timely five-point reversal and nearfall situation to defeat Howe by an 9-8 margin.

Cal Poly continued to dominate the first half of the dual, however. Tanner Gardner (125) and Paul Gross (133) both lost hard fought decisions, but showed their typical fight throughout matches against tough opponents. Gardner fell 8-3 to Vic Moreno, who is ranked #11 in the nation, while Gross fell to Tony Franco by a score of 11-8.

With Cal Poly holding a 12-3 lead, Stanford began its comeback run. Brad Metzler continued his win streak, now at 16, by handling Poly's Steve Esparza by an 8-4 score. Luis Vendrell (149) then disposed of the Mustang's David Roberts before Matt Gentry (157) and Brian Perry (165) tallied major decisions. Their superb wrestling gave the Cardinal a 17-12 lead going into the final match of the day. The win was Gentry's 29th on the year.

Stanford sophomore Imad Kharbush (174) then closed the door on Poly's hope for a dual victory by holding off Poly's Sam Temko for a 6-0.

Stanford resumes action next Friday (1/30) at home against Cal State Fullerton. The dual begins an hour earlier than most regular meet times, with the first bout beginning at 6:00 pm in Stanford's Burnham Pavilion.
