WSU Falls to Washington 72-54

SEATTLE, Wash. - The Washington State freshmen duo of Kate Benz and Stephanie Singer combined for 25 points in the Cougars' 72-54 loss to the Washington Huskies in Pacific-10 Conference women's basketball action, Saturday at Bank of America Arena.
Benz led WSU (4-14, 0-9 Pac-10) with 15 points while Singer added 10 for WSU. Benz also recorded her first double-double of the season pulling down a game-high 10 rebounds. It was Benz's fifth game this season scoring in double figures while Singer posted her fourth contest in double-digits.
Giuliana Mendiola led a trio of Huskies in double figures with 18 points. Andrea Lalum (15 points) Cheri Craddock (11 points) and Cameo Hicks (10 points) also scored in double digits for UW.
The Huskies opened up as much as a six-point lead in the early going and enjoyed a 14-9 advantage at the 12:22 mark of the first half.
A battle of runs between the two teams ensued for the remainder of the half as the Cougars put together runs of 7-0 and 17-5. The initial 7-0 run, sparked by four points from Charmaine Jones and a Jessica Perry trey, gave WSU its first lead of the game at 16-14 at the 9:20 mark.
After taking a full timeout to regroup, UW did just that going on an 18-0 run in just over a four minute span to open a 16-point advantage at 32-16 with 5:10 remaining.
But the Cougars recovered with their 17-5 run, which began with seven consecutive points, to pull to within four at 37-33 with 1:31 left. However, the Huskies went into the half with a 41-33 lead as they scored the final four points of the opening 20 minutes of play.
WSU began the final 20 minutes with a 7-0 run to slice its deficit to one at 41-40 with 17:44 remaining.
Consecutive buckets by Lalum sparked an 11-2 Husky run that re-established Washington's double-digit advantage at 52-42 with 12:45 left. WSU would get no closer than eight the rest of the way.
WSU returns to action Thursday, Jan. 29 at California at 7 p.m.
