TEMPE, Ariz. - A four run fourth inning propelled the 20th-ranked Arizona State softball team (1-0) to a 5-2 season-opening victory over Stephen F. Austin (0-1), Friday night at Farrington Stadium.
The Sun Devils took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning off two hits and two SFA errors. Valerie Sevilla opened the inning with a bunt single and advanced to second on a throwing error by the third baseman. Kristin Farber followed with an infield single, then Phelan Wright reached first on another error, this time by the catcher to load the bases. Keri Pulcifer then drove in Sevilla for the first run on a groundout to short.
ASU then tagged on four more runs to open the game. Wright began the inning with her 31st career double, and Pulcifer singled to left to put runners on the corners. Kim Zadrozny then placed down a sacrifice bunt, but the third baseman misplayed the ball, allowing Wright to come home. Kari Reidhead then gounded out to short, but drove in two more runs off of another SFA error. Katie Cobos followed with her first career double to left centerfield to drive in her first RBI and stretch the lead to 5-0.
SFA would get one run back in the top of the fifth. Jamie Brown singled to ASU's starting pitcher Ashley Werschky (1-0), but Werschky's throw to first was high and went into right field, allowing Brown to advance to third. Crystal Dahlquist followed with an infield groundout to bring Brown home. They would score one more run in the sixth when Crista Hargrove singled, then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Hargrove moved to third on a groundout and then scored on a sacrifice bunt by Ragen Rutherford.
Werschky then retired the side in the seventh to seal her first win of the year. Werschky gave up seven hits and one earned run with three strikeouts. SFA's Nicole Carter (0-1) took the loss, allowing five runs, two earned off five hits. Crissy Autry relived for the final two and two-thirds innings, striking out five.
